Editorial: Round 1

Here is "Garden Ornaments" for Blueprint Magazine...

"Design Within Reach" for Nylon Guys:

I realized that these are taking longer than I thought, so my time management this time around was pretty terrible. Now I know how much time I need to allot in my day: all day, every day.

Editorial: Swipe

My first article is about Mike Perry. There was a small article about him in Nylon Guys, and there wasn't any special type or layout treatment. We'll see what I come up with today.

Nylon Guys means that my audience is most likely male. Young, late teens to twenties. Income is not too high, but they do want to stay hip and current. Fashionable. Trendy. A little bit rebellious.

First, some of Perry's works:

The title of the article is "Design Within Reach." A very approachable design style. I started looking up vernacular designs, mostly zines, and one Marinetti:
Second article is from Esquire, called "What is a Man?" All I can think about is dark wood, taxidermy, leather chairs, leather-bound books, cigars, whiskey. Ooh, animal skin rugs and butterfly specimen are a cool touch too.

Swipe and Future Projects

Maybe it's because of my most recent internship, but I've been into decorative and embellished design these days. For example:

Decorative Motifs:
Some sort of pattern:
I like this vintage-y, simplistic, natural feel:
More decorative typography:
I love serif type. Minimalistic would fit in with the vintage-y, simplistic feel.

Projects that I would like to work on:
  • Logo or a packaging project
  • Perhaps a follow up poster or advertisement design for the product
  • Event invitation for the launching of product
  • Brochure about the product (this might take a while to produce the copy text)
  • Prototyping of the actual product?
  • Since a motion project is part of the syllabus, perhaps a TV advertisement or intro motion graphic for a website.
I wonder how many of these I will be able to finish this summer.
