New Information Graphic

After some thinking, I decided to scrap my history of design idea. As much as I hated to give it up, I found it to be a bit overwhelming. Maybe I'll try it again later, when I am much more comfortable with info design.

So instead, I decided to draw out graphs for the movie industry. 3D movies are all the rage these days, and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) seem to be on the 3D bandwagon, creating 3D movie screens everywhere.

I had to calculate the numbers for the final pie chart. I'm still waiting for a response from the person in the LA office who might be able to five me the information. Until then, I have numbers based on what information I was already given.

Right now, it seems very corporate. I purposely chose these colors because they the colors of the organization. How do I make this more interesting and fun?

Information Design: Work in Progress

So this is a very very rough, highly unfinished work in progress. This covers only 50 years. I haven't even gotten to "post-Modernist" design. That will mean even more lines going everywhere since so many past movements affected them.

Things I must fix:
  1. The arrows
I drew the arrow heads myself because I wanted the info map to look warm. But now I see that it's making the entire thing look messy. Plus the arrow heads are cluttering everything up.
  2. The starting point (from a design perspective)
I started with a straight line starting from cubism, because that's the movement that I thought that had the most momentum over other movements. After laying out pre-WWII design history, I realized that Constructivism actually had more influence, which makes me wonder if I should create the linear motion of history with Constructivism as my starting point.
  3. Icons
    Must have colorful icons!
  4. Color Scheme
I know I definitely want to have a cool, fresh blue. What to pair that with?
We'll see if there are any other suggestions in class tonight.

My head is about to explode.

It's Been Done Before! (Kinda)

My information graphic will be on the history of modern design. After doing almost all of my research, I decided to take a break by sketching out on paper a preliminary of my information map. This is how it looks:

(The horror, the horror!)

This was to get a general idea of how I should place pieces of information in relation to each other. I started looking for artistic movements that had the most arrows (therefore, making it a movement that required lots of space around it for all the other movements in spawned and the movements it was influenced by) and I was the Cubism was a pretty big movement when seen in the information map. Then I realized that there was something familiar about this. Was there some sort of information design revolving around Cubism? I searched, and finally, I found THIS:

Arg! Now I have to try to not make my own info map look too much like this.

PSA Posters - Draft 1

I've decided to create posters for the local animal shelter. I've seen one poster for an animal shelter somewhere in Manhattan, and upon seeing that, I realized that I've never noticed any other advertising for shelters. Unfortunately, they are overpopulated, and many animals are euthanized.

The great thing about the local animal shelter here in Syosset is that they are a no-kill shelter. They have practically no promotional materials. They don't even have a proper website. So here is a set of potential posters for the shelter. I wanted to get away from heartbreaking photographs, and wanted to go in a more loving direction. But I think this came out a bit too cutesy...

My instincts seem to have left me.
